Connect Strava to ChatGPT: what exists today, and the direct route if you run with a Garmin
Running Workout does not read Strava, and ChatGPT has no official Strava app. But if your runs reach Strava from a Garmin watch, they go through Garmin Connect first: connect your Garmin, and within ten minutes ChatGPT reads those same runs and sends your next workout to your watch. Here is what exists on the Strava side, what Strava allows, and the steps to follow.

Ask your assistant
Once your Garmin is connected, paste one of these into Claude or ChatGPT:
-
« Analyse my last run: pace per mile, heart rate, and the point where I slowed down. »
-
« Compare my long runs from the past month: is my pace improving at the same heart rate? »
-
« Build me an interval session for Thursday and send it to my Garmin watch. »

Is there an official Strava app in ChatGPT?
No, as of October 27, 2026: searching "Strava" in ChatGPT's plugin directory shows no plugin published by Strava, only third-party tools. Strava's own AI connector, the Strava MCP, launched on June 1, 2026 with Claude only; Strava says it wants to support other assistants later. It is reserved for Strava subscribers (a trial does not count) and it is read-only: it cannot upload or edit activities.
| Option | What it does | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Strava MCP, with Claude | Claude reads your Strava data (pace, heart rate, GPS, power) without writing anything | A Strava subscription and Claude; not ChatGPT |
| Athlete Intelligence, inside Strava | AI summaries of each activity | A Strava subscription or the trial |
| Exporting your Strava data | A file of your activities to attach to a conversation, with no sync | The Strava website (export is not in the app) |
| Garmin + Running Workout in ChatGPT | ChatGPT reads your Garmin runs, creates workouts and sends them to your watch | A Garmin watch and a Running Workout account |
What Strava allows other apps to do with AI
Strava only authorizes its own connector: its API Policy, in force since June 1, 2026, forbids third-party apps from using Strava data to develop or run an AI application, including feeding it into an assistant's context window (section 5.3), and from operating an MCP server that exposes the Strava API (section 5.16). The Strava MCP is the only authorized interface for an assistant (section 3.5).
In practice, tutorials that plug a custom GPT into the Strava API, or community MCP servers that read Strava, run into these terms. Before giving such a tool access, check what it does with your data.
The direct route if you run with a Garmin
If your runs reach Strava from a Garmin watch, their source is Garmin Connect: according to Strava's help centre, Strava receives them from Garmin Connect once you authorize the link, with the "Activities" permission switched on in Garmin Connect. Connecting the Garmin to ChatGPT with Running Workout gives it those same runs at the source, and adds what Strava's connector does not do: create workouts and send them to your watch.
- On runningworkout.fr, sign in with Garmin: Garmin's official screen, no password handed over. Turn on historical data so ChatGPT sees your past runs.
- In ChatGPT, open Plugins in the sidebar, search for Running Workout, click "Install plugin" and approve access; the "Add to ChatGPT" button at the end of sign-up takes you straight there.
- Open a new conversation and ask, for example, for an analysis of your last run.
- Strava keeps receiving your activities as before: Running Workout does not touch the link between Garmin and Strava.
According to OpenAI, the plugin directory is open across ChatGPT plans, but installing a plugin can depend on your plan and country. If the button does not appear, Claude is the other route: Running Workout is in its connector directory, which is open to all users.
What ChatGPT will see, and what stays on Strava
With Running Workout, ChatGPT sees what your Garmin records in Garmin Connect, not your Strava profile:
- It sees: your Garmin activities with pace, heart rate and splits, your profile (MAS, max heart rate, load) and your scheduled workouts.
- It does not see: kudos, comments, segments, clubs, or runs recorded only with the Strava phone app or with another brand of watch.
- It changes nothing: neither your Garmin activities nor your Strava ones; the workouts it creates go to Garmin Connect, not to Strava.
No Garmin? If you subscribe to Strava, its connector works with Claude; otherwise, exporting your data from the Strava website allows a one-off analysis, with nothing sent to a watch.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an official Strava app for ChatGPT?
No, as of October 27, 2026. Strava launched its own AI connector, the Strava MCP, but it works with Claude only, for subscribers, read-only. In ChatGPT's plugin directory, a search for "Strava" shows only third-party tools.
Can Running Workout read my Strava activities?
No. Running Workout only reads Garmin Connect. If your runs reach Strava from a Garmin, connect the Garmin: ChatGPT will see the same activities and can send workouts to your watch.
What is Athlete Intelligence, Strava's AI?

Do I need a ChatGPT subscription?
Not necessarily: according to OpenAI, the plugin directory, where Running Workout is listed, is open across ChatGPT plans, although installing a plugin can depend on your plan, country and workspace. If the install button appears, you are set.
Is Running Workout free?
Free to start: Garmin connection, plans, reading your activities and 4 workouts a month sent to your watch. Running Workout Pro (€4.90 a month or €35 a year, no commitment) removes the limit.
