ChatGPT marathon training plan: from text to a real plan on your Garmin

Yes, ChatGPT can write a marathon plan. On its own, though, it sees neither your runs nor your watch, and its plan stays text you have to copy over. Connect your Garmin to Running Workout and install the plugin in ChatGPT: about ten minutes later, ChatGPT has read your real runs and week one of the plan sits in your Garmin Connect calendar, ready for the watch.

Once your Garmin is connected, paste one of these into Claude or ChatGPT:

  • « Look at my runs from the last 8 weeks: can I aim for a marathon in 16 weeks with 4 runs a week? »

  • « Start my marathon plan and put the first week in my Garmin calendar. »

  • « Review my plan week: I missed the threshold session, what do we change? »

What ChatGPT does on its own, and what it lacks

ChatGPT writes a coherent marathon plan in seconds: phases, intervals, long runs, taper. But on its own it builds it on what you tell it about yourself, not on what you actually run, and it cannot send anything to Garmin Connect.

  • It can't see your runs: volume, longest run and heart rate have to come from you.
  • Its paces start from a race time you quote, or from a guess.
  • The plan stays text: every workout has to be rebuilt by hand in Garmin Connect, steps and targets included.

Linked to Garmin through Running Workout, ChatGPT reasons the same way, but from your Garmin Connect activities, and it writes into your Garmin calendar.

The same request, with and without Garmin connected

Same sentence, two results: "Build me a marathon plan, race in 16 weeks, 4 runs a week."

Step ChatGPT alone ChatGPT with Running Workout
Starting point What you tell it about your running Your Garmin runs from recent weeks: volume, longest run, heart rate
Paces Taken from a quoted race time, or guessed Worked out from your MAS, maximal aerobic speed (test, recent race or computed value), which it asks you to confirm
The plan A 16-week table in the chat Running Workout's marathon plan, fitted to your race date
On the watch 64 workouts to rebuild in Garmin Connect Each week placed in your Garmin calendar, received at the next sync
Missed week You explain it, then the plan gets rewritten It compares the plan with what the watch recorded, then applies the plan's rule

No known MAS? ChatGPT first sends a 6-minute test to your watch, then works out your MAS from the run recorded in Garmin Connect.

The marathon plan ChatGPT puts on your Garmin

ChatGPT doesn't make the plan up: it relies on Running Workout's marathon plan, 12 to 16 weeks depending on the time left before your race, 3 to 7 runs a week, including two quality sessions and a long run.

  • Five phases: build-up (up to 4 weeks, depending on the time available), base, development, race-specific, then a two-week taper.
  • Long runs up to 2 h 30, finishing at marathon pace; in the peak week, a version of about 19 miles if it fits under 2 h 50 at your pace.
  • Marathon pace set from your goal time, or graded by your MAS if you don't give one.
  • Race date, number of runs and days are set on Running Workout's Plan screen: ChatGPT sends you there, reads the summary back and waits for your go.

ChatGPT then walks you through week one and sends it to your Garmin Connect calendar; the watch gets it at the next sync, with the target pace of every step.

Every week, the review and the adjustment

Adjusting is what a text plan can't do: every week, ChatGPT matches each planned workout with what your watch recorded in Garmin Connect, checks your training load, asks you to rate the week from 1 to 5, then applies the rules of Running Workout's plan:

  • Two or more missed workouts: the week is repeated before moving on.
  • One missed quality session: it is not made up, so two hard days never follow each other.
  • Load rising sharply: the next week gets lighter.
  • Near the end of the plan, nothing is repeated: the race date rules.
  • Race moved: the plan shifts to the new date, and ChatGPT moves the workouts already sent.

Linking ChatGPT to Garmin, step by step

  • On runningworkout.fr, click "Get started" and sign in on Garmin's official site: Running Workout never sees your Garmin password.
  • On Garmin's sharing screen, turn on historical data: without it, ChatGPT can't see your past runs.
  • At the end of sign-up, the "Add to ChatGPT" button opens Running Workout's page in ChatGPT's plugin directory: choose "Install plugin", then authorize your account.
  • In a new conversation, mention @Running Workout, then ask for your marathon plan.

According to OpenAI's help center (October 27, 2026), the plugin directory is open on every ChatGPT plan; installing can depend on your plan, your country or a work account's admin. If "Install plugin" doesn't show up, Running Workout is also in Claude's directory.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT make a running plan?

Yes, on paper. What it lacks is your data and your watch: Running Workout gives it both, plus your Garmin Connect calendar.

What about a half marathon or a 10K?

Same idea with Running Workout's other plans: half marathon in 10 weeks (3 or 4 runs a week), 10K in 8 weeks (3 to 5), 5K in 6 weeks (3 or 4), and a 6-week return-to-running plan that needs no MAS.

Can ChatGPT change my Garmin activities?

No. Through Running Workout, ChatGPT reads your activities and only writes scheduled workouts to Garmin Connect, never your run history. You can cut its access from your Running Workout settings.

Which watches and apps work?

Watches that accept Garmin Connect workouts: most Forerunner, Fenix, Epix, Enduro, Instinct and Venu models. Running Workout reads Garmin only: not Strava, Coros, Polar or Apple Watch.

Is Running Workout free?

Free to start: Garmin connection, plans, reading your activities and 4 workouts a month sent to your watch. Running Workout Pro (€4.90 a month or €35 a year, no commitment) removes the limit.
