Free running coach: the real options in 2026, and what they're worth

Watch apps, downloadable plans, clubs, AI assistants: there are several ways to get coached without paying. They are not equal. Here is an honest comparison of what each option can do, what it can't, and for which runner.

What we expect from a coach, free or not

A coach does four things: builds a plan suited to your level and goal, adjusts sessions to what you actually ran, tells you what to do when things slip (missed session, fatigue, niggle), and makes sessions easy to execute. A free solution is worth what it covers of these four points. The table below reviews them.

Option Suited plan Adjusted to your runs Reacts to setbacks Workouts on the watch Real cost
PDF plan or blog article Generic No No Entered by hand Free
Garmin Coach (in Garmin Connect) Yes, 5K to half Partly Little Yes Free with the watch
Coaching apps Yes Depends on the app Depends on the app Often in the paid tier Free trial, then subscription
Running club or group Yes, collective By the coach, by eye Yes, humanly No Yearly membership
AI assistant alone (ChatGPT, Claude) Yes, if you describe everything No, it can't see your runs Yes, in conversation No Free or subscription
AI coach connected to Garmin (Running Workout) Yes, 5K to marathon Yes, on your real runs Yes, in conversation Yes, sent automatically Free

Free downloadable plans

It's the most common solution and the most limited. A PDF plan is written for an imaginary average runner: it knows neither your MAS, nor your schedule, nor the week you were sick. It remains useful to understand the structure of a build-up, and for a first 10K without a time goal. Beyond that, the lack of adjustment costs more than a subscription would.

Garmin Coach

Included in Garmin Connect, Garmin Coach offers 5K, 10K and half marathon plans by real coaches, with workouts sent to the watch and light adaptation based on completed sessions. It's the best integrated free option if you're not targeting a marathon and accept a plan that doesn't talk back: it answers no questions and handles neither injury nor date changes.

The club and the volunteer coach

A running club costs a modest yearly membership and offers what no app has: a human eye on your stride, a group for the hard sessions, and someone to talk to. The plan there is collective, so approximate for you, and you need to be free at the group's hours. For many runners, it's the ideal complement to an individual tool.

ChatGPT or Claude as a coach: with or without your data

An AI assistant can build a coherent plan and answer your questions at any hour. Used alone, it has a major flaw: it can't see your runs. You have to describe every session, and it takes your word for it. That's exactly what a connector like Running Workout fixes: the assistant reads your real Garmin activities, knows your MAS and your load over recent weeks, and sends workouts back to the watch. Coaching becomes concrete: "you ran your long run 20 seconds per kilometre too fast, we'll lighten Thursday".

Running Workout is free and works with Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini CLI. The only possible cost is the assistant's own subscription, required for connectors on ChatGPT; on Claude, the Pro plan is enough.

Its limits are clear: you need a Garmin watch, and it's not a human. It gives no medical diagnosis and won't watch you run. For an injury, see a doctor; for technique, join a club.

Which to choose, depending on your situation

Frequently asked questions

Is a free AI coach reliable to prepare a marathon?

Yes, provided it relies on your real data and a structured plan, not on a free-form chat. Running Workout's marathon plan lasts 12 to 16 weeks, picks its variant from your actual mileage, and the assistant adjusts every week from your Garmin runs. What it doesn't replace: medical advice.

Why is Running Workout free?

Because the service is young and its creator wants runners using it and criticizing it first. There's no advertising and no data resale. The Garmin connection uses the official API.

Do I need a ChatGPT or Claude subscription?

For ChatGPT, yes: connectors require Plus or above. For Claude, the Pro plan is enough. Gemini CLI is free. Running Workout itself costs nothing.

Can I combine Garmin Coach and an AI coach?

Not at the same time on the same watch: two plans would step on each other in the calendar. Pick one per build-up. Many start with Garmin Coach for a first 10K, then move to a connected coach for the half or marathon.
