Garmin daily suggested workouts: why they're not showing, and a workout built around your goal
If today's suggestion isn't showing, start with the four causes Garmin documents below: each one takes two minutes to fix. If you'd rather have a workout built around your race and your schedule, your assistant connected through Running Workout builds it and sends it to your watch before you finish reading.

Ask your assistant
Once your Garmin is connected, paste one of these into Claude or ChatGPT:
-
« I only have 40 minutes tonight and my half marathon is in 5 weeks: suggest the workout and send it to my watch. »
-
« Look at my runs from the last 7 days: easy run or intervals today? Explain why. »
-
« Plan my workouts for this week, no running on Wednesday, and send them to my Garmin calendar. »
Free to start · 4 workouts a month sent to your watch
Example: tonight's workout, built around a 10K
10K intervals · 15 min warm-up · 5 × (3 min at 10K pace + 2 min jog) · 5 min cool-down
Example exchange; your workouts depend on your settings and your data.
How Garmin builds a suggested workout
Your watch generates a workout every day from your fitness, activity and recovery data. Depending on the model, Garmin says it considers:
- your training status, training load and load focus;
- your VO2 max and recovery time;
- your sleep and the profile of your recent workouts;
- your max heart rate, lactate threshold or FTP, only when auto-detected.
Each device calculates its own suggestions, so sync often to give it your latest data. On some watches (the Forerunner 265 and fēnix 9 manuals, for example), a race added to your Garmin Connect calendar steers the suggestions toward it.
Watches listed by Garmin: Forerunner 55, 70, 165, 170, 245, 255, 265, 570, 745, 945, 955, 965 and 970; fēnix 6 to 9 and fēnix E; epix (Gen 2); Enduro; Instinct 2, 3, Crossover and E; Venu 4, Venu X1 and vívoactive 6; plus some MARQ, D2, Descent, quatix, tactix and Edge devices.
Where to find them and how to turn them back on
As soon as your watch has your VO2 max or training status, the suggestion appears when you open a run, walk or bike profile: you can start it, dismiss it, preview its steps or turn the prompt off.
- To find it after dismissing it: in the activity profile, scroll down (or hold the middle left button), then Training > Workout Library or Workouts > Daily Suggestions or Today's Suggestion.
- To turn the prompt back on: same menu, then Settings > Workout Prompt or Enable Prompt.
- On an Edge bike computer: Training > Workouts > Daily Suggested Workout.
- Another way in: the calendar glance on your watch, if you've added it to your glance list.
Menu names vary by model; these come from Garmin's support site.
Why Garmin suggested workouts are not showing
Garmin documents four causes; check them in this order.
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Never any suggestion | Watch not on the compatible list | Check the list; otherwise ask your assistant for the workout |
| No suggestion since you started a plan | A Garmin Coach plan, a third-party plan or a week with 3 or more scheduled workouts takes priority | Expected: the suggestion stays in the Workouts menu |
| Nothing on a new watch | No VO2 max or training status yet | Run outdoors with heart rate until the watch estimates your VO2 max |
| No prompt at the start | Prompt disabled or hidden | Turn it back on (see the previous section) |
With Running Workout, the workouts your assistant sends land in your Garmin Connect calendar, so a week with three or more of them takes priority over the daily suggestion, as Garmin describes. That's by design, not a fault.
What a connected assistant does differently
Garmin's suggestion starts from your fitness metrics; an assistant connected through Running Workout starts from what you tell it. Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini reads your Garmin Connect activities and your profile (MAS, max heart rate, load), takes your goal and today's constraints, explains its proposal, then sends the workout to your Garmin Connect calendar.
| Criterion | Garmin daily suggestion | Assistant connected through Running Workout |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Status, VO2 max, recovery, sleep, depending on the watch | Your Garmin activities, your profile, your goal and what you say |
| When | Every day, without asking | When you ask, for today or the whole week |
| Constraints | Training days, long workout day, target type (by model) | In one sentence: 40 minutes, no track, heavy legs |
| Discussion | Steps and estimated benefit shown | It explains, you push back, it adjusts |
| On the watch | Right in the activity profile | In your Garmin Connect calendar, after a sync |
| Price | Included with a compatible watch | Free to start (4 workouts a month), Pro €4.90/month or €35/year |
Its limits: Running Workout doesn't read your training status, sleep or Body Battery; tell it if you slept badly and it makes a note. And it doesn't recalculate anything by itself each morning: you ask.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my Garmin stop showing suggested workouts?
First check whether a plan is running: Garmin gives priority to Garmin Coach plans, third-party plans and weeks with three or more scheduled workouts. Otherwise: incompatible watch, no VO2 max or training status, or the prompt is turned off.
Do suggested workouts take my race into account?
On some watches, yes: according to Garmin's manuals (Forerunner 265, fēnix 9), a race added to your Garmin Connect calendar steers the suggestions, as long as the watch has your VO2 max. With Running Workout, you give your assistant the date and it builds the plan up to race day.
Can my assistant see my watch's suggested workouts?
No. Running Workout reads your completed activities and your profile, not the daily suggestion or your training status. If you want it taken into account, tell your assistant what the watch suggests.
Should I turn off suggestions to follow a Running Workout plan?
No. In weeks with three or more scheduled workouts, the watch already puts yours first, and the suggestion stays in the menu. Turn the prompt off only if it bothers you.
Is Running Workout free?
Free to start: Garmin connection, plans, reading your activities and 4 workouts a month sent to your watch. Running Workout Pro (€4.90 a month or €35 a year, no commitment) removes the limit.
