Export your Garmin data to ChatGPT or Claude: file or connector?
There are two ways to let an AI read your Garmin runs: export a file and paste it into the conversation, or plug in a connector that reads Garmin Connect directly. Here are both methods step by step, what each allows, and which one to choose.

No more exports: connect your Garmin
Free · official Garmin connection · workouts sent to your watch
Two methods, two uses
The file export suits a one-off analysis: you download an activity from Garmin Connect and hand it to the AI, which reads it once. The connector suits ongoing coaching: the AI reads your activities in every conversation, knows your profile, and can send workouts back to the watch. That second method is what Running Workout provides, for free, for Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini.
| What you want to do | File export | Running Workout connector |
|---|---|---|
| Read one run in detail (GPS, HR, second-by-second pace) | Yes, with the FIT file | Yes, summary, laps and computed metrics |
| Read your whole history | Heavy: one file per activity, or a full export to sort | Yes, automatically |
| Know your MAS, max HR, training load | No, unless you type them | Yes, computed and remembered |
| Send a workout to the watch | No | Yes, in Garmin Connect on the date you want |
| Effort per conversation | Download, drag, explain | None |
| Cost | Free | Free |
Try it with your own Garmin
Free, nothing to install: connect your Garmin, then ask Claude or ChatGPT for your first workout. It lands on your watch within a minute.
Method 1: export an activity as a FIT, TCX or GPX file
On the Garmin Connect website (not the mobile app), open the activity, click the gear icon at the top right, then choose "Export Original" for the FIT file, or "Export to TCX" / "Export to GPX". FIT is the most complete: it holds heart rate, cadence, elevation and laps. GPX only holds the GPS track.
Then drag the file into ChatGPT or Claude. Both can read FIT with their code-analysis tool: ask "analyze this run: pace per kilometre, cardiac drift, time per zone". The reading is reliable, but the AI knows neither your MAS nor your other runs: give them in the message.
A FIT file contains your precise GPS position, your heart rate and the time of your runs. Before sharing it with an AI service, check that service's conversation retention settings.
Method 2: the full export of your Garmin account
For your whole history at once, Garmin offers a full account export: on the Garmin Connect website, open the account settings, then "Data Management", then "Export your data". Garmin emails you a link, often after several hours, to an archive containing all your FIT files and CSV tables.
The archive quickly reaches several hundred megabytes. For an AI, the most useful piece is the activities CSV table (one row per run: date, distance, duration, pace, average heart rate), which fits in a conversation. The individual FIT files are given one at a time.
Method 3: the Running Workout connector
Create a Running Workout account by connecting your Garmin: the connection goes through Garmin's official site, with your authorization, and Running Workout imports your recent activities. Then add the connector to your assistant (Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini CLI). From there, every conversation starts with your real data: profile, latest runs, training load.
The decisive difference is the return leg. With a file, the conversation ends with advice you have to type into Garmin Connect yourself. With the connector, the AI creates the structured workout and sends it to the watch on the date you want, in one sentence.

- For ChatGPT: the "Connect Garmin to ChatGPT" tutorial (paid plan required on ChatGPT's side).
- For Gemini: "Garmin and Gemini: what works", through Gemini CLI.
Which one to choose?
Choose the file if you want a single analysis of one specific run, a race for example, without creating an account. Choose the connector if you want a coach that follows you: it spares you the exports, knows your history and sends you workouts ready to run. Both combine: nothing stops you from handing a FIT file to Claude while the connector is active.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT read a FIT file?
Yes, with its data-analysis tool enabled: it decodes the binary FIT format and produces the tables and charts you ask for. Claude does too. For GPX or TCX, both read the text directly.
Does the connector give second-by-second heart rate?
It gives each activity's summary, the laps (with average pace and heart rate per lap) and computed metrics: moving time, normalized power, drift. For a second-by-second curve, the FIT file remains the reference.
Do I have to give my Garmin password to Running Workout?
No. You sign in on Garmin's site, which issues an authorization to Running Workout. The password never passes through, and the authorization can be revoked from Garmin Connect.
Can I import my old FIT files into Running Workout?
Yes: from your account's Import page, drag your FIT files. They join your history, and your assistant sees them like the automatically imported activities.
No more exports: connect your Garmin
Free. Your assistant reads your runs in every conversation and sends workouts back to the watch.
