Once your Garmin is connected, paste one of these into Claude or ChatGPT:

  • « I've been following Garmin Coach: look at my last 8 weeks of running and tell me if a 3:45 marathon on April 11, 2027 is realistic. »

  • « Build me a 10-week half marathon plan, 4 runs a week, long run on Sunday, no running on Wednesday. »

  • « I have track access on Thursday: create 6 × half-mile repeats at my 10K pace and send it to my watch. »

What Garmin Coach offers in 2026

Garmin Coach is the set of training plans built into the Garmin Connect app, with no subscription needed (only the CIRQA band requires Garmin Connect+). For running, Garmin offers two adaptive options, Run Coach and the expert plans, plus self-guided plans on the website.

Plan Distances Length How it adapts
Run Coach 5K, 10K, half, marathon, custom distance 6 to 52 weeks Workouts change daily with performance and health metrics
Expert plans (Jeff Galloway, Greg McMillan, Amy Parkerson-Mitchell) 5K, 10K, half 6 to 26 weeks, at least 14 for the half Based on benchmark runs; workouts can be rescheduled
Self-guided plans (Garmin Connect website) 5K, 10K, half, marathon 12 to 16 weeks Fixed plan, usable even without a Garmin device

Run Coach needs a compatible watch, such as the Forerunner 70, 165, 170, 255, 265, 570 or 955; the expert plans run on more models, including the Forerunner 45, 245 and 745. Where to find it: More > Training & Planning > Garmin Coach Plans.

Who Garmin Coach is right for

Garmin Coach suits you if you want a plan that runs itself, with no other app: according to Garmin, Run Coach recalculates workouts daily from your recovery and sleep, offers strength sessions and predicts your race time.

  • You're training for a 5K, 10K, half or marathon and you're happy to let the plan decide.
  • You're a beginner: the expert plans have a run/walk 5K version, and so does Run Coach on the Forerunner 70 and 170.
  • You want everything in Garmin Connect, with nothing to adjust each week.
  • Garmin Coach for a marathon: Run Coach (or a self-guided plan) covers it, not the expert plans, which stop at the half.

Its limits, as Garmin itself states them

Garmin lists them in its own help pages; they matter when your schedule or race changes.

  • Run Coach: no manual rescheduling, the plan adapts on its own; the end date and distance can't be changed, and deleting the event deletes the whole plan.
  • Expert plans: no marathon; they're designed for runners at 7:00 per mile or slower, and because they're built in miles, metric users see unrounded distances.
  • Time goals: if your weekly mileage is well below the target distance, only a completion goal is offered.
  • Settings fixed in advance (days, long run, target type, strength): Garmin explains its suggestions but describes no back-and-forth in plain language.

What a connected AI coach does differently

With Running Workout, Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini reads the same Garmin Connect activities, but it talks back: it explains a run, takes a constraint you state in one sentence, builds the workout and sends it to your Garmin Connect calendar; your watch gets it when it syncs.

Criterion Garmin Coach Assistant connected through Running Workout
Price Included in Garmin Connect Free to start (4 workouts a month to your watch), Pro €4.90/month or €35/year
Distances 5K to marathon, custom distance with Run Coach Plans from 5K to marathon, plus return to running; single workouts on request
Adapting Automatic, daily, using recovery and sleep When you ask and at the weekly review, from your runs and your load (ACWR)
Race date changes End date can't be changed (Run Coach) Moved in one sentence, the rest of the plan is reset around it
Constraints Days, long run, target type Just say them: a sore knee, track access on Thursday, a week away
Watches List per plan on Garmin's support site Those that receive workouts from Garmin Connect

Its limits: Running Workout reads Garmin only (not Strava, Coros or Apple Watch), doesn't see sleep, Body Battery or training status, and doesn't rewrite the plan by itself overnight. It doesn't replace a doctor.

Switching from Garmin Coach to an AI coach, step by step

One plan per race build-up: stop Garmin Coach first.

  • In Garmin Connect: More > Training & Planning > Garmin Coach Plans, open your plan, then the three-dot menu to pause or quit it.
  • On runningworkout.fr, connect Garmin through Garmin's official sign-in: Running Workout never sees your Garmin password.
  • Add the Running Workout connector to Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini, following the guide for your assistant.
  • Ask for your plan or today's workout, then sync your watch: the workout is in the calendar on the planned date.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to pay for Garmin Coach?

No. Garmin Coach plans are included in the Garmin Connect app with no subscription; only the CIRQA band requires Garmin Connect+. Connect+ ($6.99 a month in the US, £6.99 in the UK) adds expert guidance and videos for Run Coach.

Does Garmin Coach have a marathon plan?

Yes, with Run Coach (6 to 52 weeks, on a compatible watch) and with the self-guided plans on the Garmin Connect website (12 to 16 weeks). The expert plans stop at the half marathon.

Can I use Garmin Coach and an AI coach at the same time?

Not for sending workouts: one plan per build-up, or the calendar contradicts itself. You can keep Garmin Coach and just ask your assistant to analyze your runs.

What's the Garmin Coach alternative if my race date changes?

A plan you can shift. A Run Coach plan's end date can't be changed; with Running Workout, you give your assistant the new date and the rest of the plan is reset, as long as enough weeks remain.

Is Running Workout free?

Free to start: Garmin connection, plans, reading your activities and 4 workouts a month sent to your watch. Running Workout Pro (€4.90 a month or €35 a year, no commitment) removes the limit.
