Does Grok accept a Garmin connector? Yes, as a custom connector
Yes. Grok offers built-in connectors (Gmail, Google Drive, OneDrive, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, Salesforce), a catalog of ready-made services, and custom MCP connectors: you give it a server address, Grok discovers the tools and uses them in the conversation. Running Workout is not in Grok's catalog: you add it as a custom connector, with its address. Grok can then read your Garmin activities (pace, heart rate, laps), your profile (MAS, max heart rate, training load) and send structured workouts to Garmin Connect.
| Where | How | For whom |
|---|---|---|
| grok.com | "New Connector", then "Custom" | All Grok users, according to its documentation |
| Grok Business and Enterprise | An admin first adds the server in console.x.ai | Team members, after that |
| Grok Build, in the terminal | One "grok mcp add" command | Developers |
Running Workout has not yet been tried with Grok: the steps come from Grok's documentation. The Running Workout server is public and served over HTTPS, as Grok requires, and authorization uses OAuth, the standard for MCP connectors.
Step by step on grok.com
From a computer, in five minutes. The labels below are the ones used in Grok's documentation.
- Create your account on runningworkout.fr by signing in on Garmin's site, and turn on "Historical Data" on the Garmin screen so your past runs can be read.
- Open grok.com/connectors, click "New Connector", then choose "Custom".
- Paste the Running Workout server address: https://www.runningworkout.fr/mcp
- Complete the authentication: runningworkout.fr opens, sign in if needed and approve the authorization screen, which lists what Grok will be able to do.
- In a conversation, talk about your Garmin runs or ask for a workout: according to its documentation, Grok uses a connector's tools on its own when the question relates to it.
Once the workout is sent, sync your watch with the Garmin Connect app: it shows up in your training calendar on the date you asked for.
With Grok Business, Enterprise or Grok Build
On a Grok Business or Enterprise account, an admin has to add the connector first: on console.x.ai, in the team, "Grok Business", then "Connectors", "+ Add Connector", "Other", and the server address. Each member then connects their own account on grok.com/connectors.
Grok Build, Grok's command-line coding agent, adds a remote MCP server in one command; according to its documentation, the OAuth sign-in opens in your browser on first use: grok mcp add --transport http running-workout https://www.runningworkout.fr/mcp
Inside Grok Build, the /mcps command shows your servers, and the i key starts authentication for an OAuth server. The Running Workout tools there are the same as on grok.com.
If something goes wrong
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No "Custom" under "New Connector" | Business or Enterprise account: the admin must add the server first | Ask your admin to add it in console.x.ai |
| Grok answers without your runs | The question doesn't point to Garmin | Mention Garmin or Running Workout in your request |
| Nothing in the mobile app | Grok's documentation does not cover connectors on mobile | Use grok.com |
| Workout missing on the watch | Watch not synced, or workout requested without a date | Sync Garmin Connect; give a date |
If the option does not show up on your account, the same connection works with Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini CLI: see the guides at the bottom of the page.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Grok subscription to connect Garmin?
Grok's documentation says connectors are available to all Grok users, without naming a plan. We have not checked this on an account without a subscription: if "Custom" does not show up, use Claude or ChatGPT, which work with the same Running Workout account.
Can I use Grok on my phone to send a workout?
The documentation does not say. Add the connector on grok.com from a computer, then try in the Grok app; if your data is not there, use grok.com in your browser.
Is Running Workout in Grok's connector catalog?
No. You add it as a custom connector with its address, https://www.runningworkout.fr/mcp; authorization then happens on runningworkout.fr in about a minute.
Can Grok change my Garmin activities?
No. The connector reads your activities and profile, and only writes planned workouts to Garmin Connect; your activity history is never touched. You can revoke Grok's access at any time from your Running Workout settings.
Is Running Workout free?
Free to start: Garmin connection, plans, reading your activities and 4 workouts a month sent to your watch. Running Workout Pro (€4.90 a month or €35 a year, no commitment) removes the limit.
