Gemini running plan: from the conversation to your Garmin
Yes, Gemini can write a running plan, from 5K to marathon. On its own it sees neither your runs nor your watch; linked to Garmin through Running Workout, it reads your activities and places the plan week by week in your Garmin Connect calendar. What works today depends on your country and your version of Gemini: here is where things stand on October 27, 2026, then the plan itself.

What Gemini does with a training plan on its own
Gemini drafts a full plan in one answer: phases, workouts, long runs, paces. On its own it builds it on what you tell it, without seeing your Garmin runs, and the plan stays text: every workout has to be rebuilt by hand in Garmin Connect, and every missed week explained and rewritten.
The same request, "Build me a half-marathon plan for 10 weeks from now, 3 runs a week", gives two results. On its own, Gemini answers with a table of 30 workouts, paces taken from the race time you quote. Linked through Running Workout, it first reads your recent weeks in Garmin Connect (volume, longest run, heart rate), asks you to confirm your MAS (maximal aerobic speed), then places week one of the half-marathon plan in your Garmin calendar; the next weeks follow one at a time, after each review.
Linking Gemini to Garmin: what exists on October 27, 2026
Gemini can link to Garmin through Running Workout, but not everywhere or in every version. According to Google's documentation, checked on October 27, 2026:
| Gemini version | Linked to Garmin via Running Workout? | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini app (web, phone) | Yes, by adding Running Workout as a custom app | United States, English, personal Google account, 18 or older, Keep Activity on; added from gemini.google.com. Not yet tried by our team |
| Gemini CLI (terminal) | Yes, the route in our guide | Since June 18, 2026, Google no longer serves it to no-cost personal accounts or to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers; it still works with a paid Gemini API key |
| Antigravity CLI (terminal) | Possible according to Google | Gemini CLI's successor accepts remote MCP servers, with automatic OAuth sign-in. Not yet tried by our team |
The address to enter is the same everywhere: https://www.runningworkout.fr/mcp. If "Custom apps" doesn't appear in Gemini's Connected Apps settings, your account doesn't have access yet: Claude and ChatGPT already link the same Running Workout account to Garmin, on computer and phone. The Gemini setup details are on our Garmin and Gemini page.
The plan Gemini puts on your Garmin
Linked through Running Workout, Gemini doesn't improvise a plan: it relies on Running Workout's plans, each with its own length, number of runs and longest run.
| Plan | Length | Runs per week | Longest run |
|---|---|---|---|
| Return to running | 6 weeks | 3 | 30 minutes of continuous running, no MAS needed |
| 5K | 6 weeks | 3 or 4 | 1 h |
| 10K | 8 weeks | 3 to 5 | 1 h 15 |
| Half marathon | 10 weeks | 3 or 4 | 1 h 48, about 12 miles |
| Marathon | 12 to 16 weeks | 3 to 7 | 2 h 30, or about 19 miles in the peak week |
Every target is set as a percentage of your MAS and turned into a pace on each workout. Gemini doesn't pick the settings for you: race date, number of runs and days are set on Running Workout's Plan screen, then it reads the summary back to you before building the plan in Garmin Connect.
After each week: review, adjustment, next week
Once the plan is running, ask for a review every week: Gemini compares the plan with what your watch recorded in Garmin Connect, applies the rule of Running Workout's plan (two missed workouts: repeat the week; one missed quality session: don't make it up; load rising sharply: go lighter), then places the next week. A postponed race shifts the whole plan.
According to Google, the Gemini app asks for your confirmation before any write action in a connected app: nothing goes to your watch without your go.
Frequently asked questions
Can Gemini make a marathon plan?
Yes, as text, like any plan. For it to start from your real runs and end up on your watch, it has to be linked to Garmin through Running Workout; the marathon plan then lasts 12 to 16 weeks depending on your race date, with 3 to 7 runs a week.
Can Gemini on my phone send the plan to my watch?
In the United States, according to Google, yes: a custom app added from gemini.google.com then works on the web and in the mobile app. Elsewhere, the option isn't offered as of October 27, 2026; Claude and ChatGPT do it from their mobile apps.
Do I need a Google AI subscription?
For the Gemini app, Google's help page on custom apps mentions no subscription, only country, language, age and account conditions. For Gemini CLI, a paid Gemini API key is needed since June 18, 2026.
What if I also use Claude or ChatGPT?
The plan, your goals and your notes live in your Running Workout account: every assistant linked to that account finds them. You can start the plan with Claude and do the review with Gemini.
Is Running Workout free?
Free to start: Garmin connection, plans, reading your activities and 4 workouts a month sent to your watch. Running Workout Pro (€4.90 a month or €35 a year, no commitment) removes the limit.
