AI running assistant: one that reads your Garmin and puts workouts on your watch
Connect your Garmin to Running Workout, add it to Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini, then ask for tomorrow's session: within ten minutes the assistant has read your recent runs, built the workout and put it on your Garmin calendar, ready for your watch. Here is what a connected running assistant does, how it differs from a training-plan app, and what it will not do.

Ask your assistant
Once your Garmin is connected, paste one of these into Claude or ChatGPT:
-
« Look at my last two weeks of running and tell me what to do tomorrow, then send the workout to my watch. »
-
« Build me an 8-week 10K plan with 3 runs a week and put this week on my Garmin calendar. »
-
« Analyse yesterday's run: pace per mile, heart rate, and tell me if I started too fast. »
Free to start · 4 workouts a month sent to your watch
What it looks like the day after a long run
Easy run 40 min · 10:30–11:00 min/mi · heart rate under 145 · tomorrow on your watch
Example exchange; your workouts depend on your settings and your data.
What a running assistant does once it sees your Garmin
An AI running assistant is the chat assistant you already use, Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini, connected to your Garmin Connect account through Running Workout, so it answers from your real runs instead of from what you remember to tell it. In practice, it can:
- Read your activities in detail: pace per mile, heart rate, laps and splits.
- Read and complete your profile: MAS, max heart rate, training load over recent weeks.
- Build a structured workout (warm-up, reps, recoveries, pace or heart-rate targets) and send it to Garmin Connect, where your watch picks it up at the next sync.
- Lay out a plan week by week: marathon in 12 to 16 weeks, half marathon in 10, 10K in 8, 5K, or getting back into running.
- Move or delete a scheduled session when your week changes.
- Remember your goals, constraints and notes from one conversation to the next.
The same tools work in all three assistants, for cycling and pool swimming too: only the chat app around them changes.
Assistant or training-plan app: what actually changes
The difference is who leads: a training-plan app runs the programme it designed, while a connected assistant answers what you ask, from the same Garmin data every time. Neither is the right choice for everyone.
| What changes | Training-plan app | Connected assistant (Running Workout) |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | You pick a plan and follow its sessions | You ask in one sentence: a session, a week, a full plan |
| When your week changes | Depends on the app: settings, menus or a new plan | You say it: "I can't run Thursday, move the intervals to Friday" |
| Explanations | What the app chooses to show | You ask why a session is there, or what your last run shows |
| What it needs from you | Little: the plan is already written | Clear requests: the assistant acts when you talk to it |
| Watches | Depends on the app | Garmin only |
If you want a ready-made path and few decisions, a training-plan app suits you. If you want to change things in your own words and understand why, an assistant suits you, and Running Workout can still lay out a full plan inside it.
Get one in ten minutes
You need a Garmin watch that accepts Garmin Connect workouts and a Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini account; Running Workout links the two.
- Sign in with Garmin on runningworkout.fr: Garmin's official authorization screen, no Garmin password given to Running Workout. Turn on historical data so the assistant sees your past runs.
- Claude: the "Add to Claude" button at the end of sign-up opens the Running Workout listing in Claude's connector directory; click "Connect".
- ChatGPT: the "Add to ChatGPT" button opens the Running Workout plugin page in ChatGPT (also under Plugins in the sidebar); click "Install plugin", then approve access.
- Gemini: according to Google's help pages, consulted on October 27, 2026, the Gemini app accepts custom apps by MCP server address, for now in the US and in English; the address is https://www.runningworkout.fr/mcp.
- Enable Running Workout in the conversation, ask for your session, then sync your watch with the Garmin Connect app.
What it will not do
With Running Workout, here is what the assistant does not do:
- Read Strava, Coros, Polar, Suunto or Apple Watch: Garmin only.
- Change or delete your activity history: it reads activities and only writes planned workouts.
- Check the weather, draw a GPS route or record audio notes.
- Make up your MAS: without a test or a race time from you, it suggests a test.
- Replace a doctor: pain, illness or an unusual heart rate is a matter for a health professional, not for a training plan.
Running Workout's coaching rules have it propose the session before sending it, so you approve what reaches your watch.
Frequently asked questions
Which AI assistants can work as a running assistant with my Garmin?
Claude and ChatGPT, each through its official catalogue: Claude's connector directory and ChatGPT's plugin directory. Gemini works through the custom apps of the Gemini app, which Google limits for now to the US and English; Claude Code also works, in a terminal. The tools, your plan and your notes are the same everywhere.
Do I need a Claude or ChatGPT subscription?
Not necessarily. Anthropic states that its directory connectors are open to all Claude users, and OpenAI that the plugin directory is open across ChatGPT plans, although installing a given plugin can depend on your plan, country and workspace. If the install button appears, you can go ahead.
Does it work from my phone?
Yes. Once Running Workout is added on claude.ai or the desktop app, Claude's iPhone and Android apps use it; ChatGPT's plugin directory is available on web, desktop and mobile; Gemini custom apps are added on the web and then work in the mobile app too. Your watch receives the workout when it syncs with Garmin Connect.
What does the assistant see of my Garmin data?
Your activities in detail (pace, heart rate, splits), your profile (MAS, max heart rate, training load), your goals and notes, and the workouts already scheduled. It never sees your Garmin password, and you can cut access from Running Workout or from the connected apps in Garmin Connect.
Is Running Workout free?
Free to start: Garmin connection, plans, reading your activities and 4 workouts a month sent to your watch. Running Workout Pro (€4.90 a month or €35 a year, no commitment) removes the limit.
