Claude AI running coach: a training week, from your Garmin data to your watch
Yes, Claude can be your running coach, as long as it can see your runs. On its own it writes a plan and explains a workout without knowing anything about your running; connected to Garmin through Running Workout, it reads your activities, sends every workout to your watch and adjusts the week when you miss one. Setup takes two minutes from Claude's connector directory, and your first weekly review follows right away.

-

A week with Claude, in three moments
MAS 5 × 3 min · Thursday · on your watch, in your Garmin calendar
Sample exchange with Claude, based on Running Workout's marathon plan; your workouts depend on your settings and your data.
Alone or connected: what Claude does for your running
On its own, Claude reasons well about training: it explains a workout, builds a plan, answers your pace questions. What it lacks is your data and your watch. Connected to Garmin through Running Workout, it does a coach's day-to-day work:
- It reads your Garmin Connect activities and each run in detail: pace per mile, heart rate, time in each zone.
- It reads your profile: MAS (maximal aerobic speed), max heart rate, training load over recent weeks.
- It records your goals, constraints and its own notes, found again from one conversation to the next.
- It builds structured workouts (warm-up, intervals, recovery, pace or heart-rate targets) and sends them to your watch.
- It places a 5K, 10K, half-marathon or marathon plan week by week in your Garmin calendar.
Its limits, plainly: Running Workout reads Garmin only (not Strava, Coros or Apple Watch), Claude never changes your activity history, and it is no substitute for a doctor.
A typical week with Claude
Here is a plan week when Claude is plugged into your Garmin through Running Workout; the sample exchange shows the tone.
- Monday, the review: Claude matches each planned workout with what your watch recorded in Garmin Connect, checks how your load is moving, asks you to rate the week from 1 to 5, then presents next week and places it in your Garmin calendar.
- Thursday, the quality session is already on your watch, with target paces worked out from your MAS: you just start it.
- Missed a workout? It applies the plan's rule: a quality session is not made up, two missed workouts mean repeating the week, and a change of day is handled by moving the workout in the calendar.
- Sunday, after the long run, ask for the analysis: mile-by-mile consistency, cardiac drift, whether you finished at the planned pace.
What Claude sees of your Garmin data
Claude only sees what Running Workout passes on from Garmin Connect, and each piece of data has a clear use:
| Data | Where it comes from | What Claude does with it |
|---|---|---|
| Recent activities | Garmin Connect | Real volume, longest run, consistency: the plan's starting point |
| Detail of a run | Garmin Connect | Pace per mile and heart rate, for the post-run analysis |
| MAS | Test, recent race or calculation, confirmed by you | The target paces of every workout |
| Max heart rate | Entered by you or from a test | Heart-rate targets, if you prefer them to pace |
| Training load | Calculated from your activities | Lighten or keep the next week |
Claude only reaches this data in conversations where the Running Workout connector is turned on, and you can revoke its access at any time from your settings.

According to Claude's help center (October 27, 2026), directory connectors are open to every account, Free plan included, on the web, desktop and mobile apps; installing them from a phone is still in beta. On a Team or Enterprise account, the organization owner adds the connector first.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Claude subscription to use it as a running coach?
No, according to Claude's help center checked on October 27, 2026: directory connectors, Running Workout included, are open to every Claude account. Only manually added custom connectors are capped at one on the Free plan.
Does Claude see my sleep or Body Battery?
No. Through Running Workout, Claude reads your activities and training profile (MAS, max heart rate, load), not your watch's sleep, stress or Body Battery data.
Does Claude remember my plan between conversations?
Yes, because the plan, your goals, your constraints and its review notes are stored in your Running Workout account, not in the conversation. Every new conversation finds them, as do ChatGPT or Gemini if connected to the same account.
Can I do it all from my phone?
Yes, once the connector is added: it shows up in the Claude mobile app, and the workout reaches your watch through the Garmin Connect app. Since adding connectors from a phone is still in beta, the safest route is to add it once on a computer.
Is Running Workout free?
Free to start: Garmin connection, plans, reading your activities and 4 workouts a month sent to your watch. Running Workout Pro (€4.90 a month or €35 a year, no commitment) removes the limit.
