Connect your Garmin, then ChatGPT

What ChatGPT can do with your Garmin
Once connected to Garmin through Running Workout, ChatGPT becomes a coach working on your real data. It reads your latest activities (pace, heart rate, distance, elevation), your profile (MAS, max heart rate, training load over recent weeks), then builds structured workouts it sends straight to Garmin Connect. On the watch, the workout guides you step by step with pace or heart-rate alerts.
The connection uses an MCP connector, an open standard ChatGPT has supported since 2025. In practice, you add the Running Workout server address in ChatGPT's settings, you authorize access to your Garmin account on Garmin's official site, and that's it. No app to install, no file to export.
- Create a workout in one sentence: "10 × 400 m at 95% of my MAS, 1 min recovery, for Thursday".
- Analyze a run: cardiac drift, kilometre consistency, time in each zone.
- Build a complete plan for a 5K, 10K, half or marathon, week after week.
- Adapt the week after a missed session, a bad night or a niggle.
- Cycling and pool swimming too, with power, cadence or pace per 100 m.
Prerequisites
You need three things: a Garmin watch that accepts Garmin Connect workouts (most recent Forerunner, Fenix, Epix, Enduro, Instinct and Venu models, plus Edge bike computers), a Garmin Connect account, and a paid ChatGPT plan. Custom connectors are not available on ChatGPT's free tier: you need Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu.
Running Workout itself is free. Create your account by connecting your Garmin: that is the only sign-up, with no password to choose and no card to enter.
Try it with your own Garmin
Free, nothing to install: connect your Garmin, then ask Claude or ChatGPT for your first workout. It lands on your watch within a minute.
Step 1: create your Running Workout account
Go to runningworkout.fr and click "Get started". You are sent to Garmin's site to sign in: Running Workout never sees your password. Garmin then shows the data-sharing screen.
On that Garmin screen, switch on "Historical Data". It is off by default. Without it, ChatGPT will not see your past runs nor the detail of each session. If you missed it, Running Workout will offer to re-authorize in one click.
Back on Running Workout, enter your first name and email. The import of your recent activities starts on its own in the background.
Step 2: turn on ChatGPT's developer mode
This is the step almost everyone misses. In ChatGPT, open Settings, then "Apps", then "Advanced settings", and enable "Developer mode". While this setting is off, the custom connector option appears nowhere.
On a Business or Enterprise account, an administrator must first allow custom MCP connectors: Workspace Settings, then "Permissions & Roles", then "Connected Data".
Step 3: create the Running Workout connector
Still in ChatGPT's Settings, open "Connectors" and click "Create". Name the connector, for example "Running Workout", paste the server address below, and choose "OAuth" as the authentication method.
https://www.runningworkout.fr/mcp
Take care with the "Description" field: ChatGPT reads it to decide when to use the connector. One precise sentence is enough, for example: "Garmin training workouts: create, schedule and analyze running, cycling and swimming sessions".
Confirm. ChatGPT discovers the server's OAuth configuration on its own and redirects you to runningworkout.fr. Sign in if needed, then approve the authorization screen, which lists exactly what ChatGPT will be able to do: read your activities and profile, create and schedule workouts. You can revoke this access at any time from your Running Workout account.
Step 4: your first workout
Open a new conversation and check that the Running Workout connector is enabled for this conversation (tools menu, under the input box). Then ask, for example:
Look at my latest runs, then create a workout for tomorrow that fits and send it to my Garmin watch.
ChatGPT first calls the profile tool, then the activities tool, proposes a workout and, once you say yes, sends it to Garmin Connect. On the watch, sync with the Garmin Connect app: the workout appears in the training calendar on the requested date. Start it from the watch's Training menu.
Two tips for the first conversations. Always say the date you want, otherwise the workout is created without being scheduled. And give a goal: "I'm preparing a 10K on November 15" completely changes what ChatGPT proposes.
What goes wrong most often
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No "Create" option in Connectors | Developer mode off, or free plan | Settings → Apps → Advanced settings → Developer mode; Plus plan or above |
| ChatGPT answers without using the connector | Connector not enabled in the conversation, or description too vague | Enable it in the tools menu; sharpen the description |
| "No activities" although you run | Historical Data declined on the Garmin screen | Re-authorize Garmin from Running Workout, with the toggle on |
| The workout does not show on the watch | Watch not synced, or workout created without a date | Sync Garmin Connect; ask for a specific date |
| Authorization error when returning to runningworkout.fr | Session expired during approval | Retry "Connect" from ChatGPT; authorization takes under a minute |
Your data, concretely
Running Workout connects to Garmin through the official API, with your explicit authorization. Access tokens are encrypted on its servers. ChatGPT only reaches your data through the connector you added yourself, and only in conversations where it is enabled. Nothing is sold or used for advertising, and access can be cut in one click from Garmin Connect or from your Running Workout account.
Frequently asked questions
Is free ChatGPT enough to connect Garmin?
No. Custom connectors, including Running Workout's, require a paid plan: Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu. Running Workout itself is free. If you use Claude or Gemini, the connection follows the same principle.
Do I need to export my Garmin files to ChatGPT?
No. With the connector, ChatGPT reads your activities directly, without FIT files or manual exports. Exporting remains possible for a one-off analysis, but it cannot send a workout to your watch.
Can ChatGPT modify or delete my Garmin activities?
No. The connector reads activities and only writes scheduled workouts. It never touches your activity history.
Which Garmin watches are compatible?
All those that accept Garmin Connect workouts: recent Forerunner, Fenix, Epix, Enduro, Instinct, Venu, and Edge bike computers for cycling. If you can see the "Workouts" menu on your watch, you are good.
How do I cut ChatGPT's access?
Two places: in ChatGPT, delete the connector; in Running Workout, revoke the assistant's access from your settings. To cut Running Workout itself, remove it from the connected apps in Garmin Connect.
