Does Perplexity accept a Garmin connector?
Yes, on the right plan. Since March 2026, Perplexity has let Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers add a remote MCP connector: you give it a server address, it discovers the tools and uses them to answer you. Running Workout is exactly that, an MCP server linked to Garmin Connect through Garmin's official sign-in. Once it is added, Perplexity can read your Garmin activities (pace, heart rate, laps), your profile (MAS, max heart rate, training load), and build structured workouts that it sends to Garmin Connect.
| Perplexity plan | Custom MCP connector |
|---|---|
| No subscription | No, according to Perplexity |
| Pro or Max | Yes |
| Enterprise | Yes, if the admin lets members add their own connectors |
We have not yet tried Running Workout inside Perplexity ourselves. The steps below come from Perplexity's documentation, and the Running Workout server follows the standard it describes: MCP over "Streamable HTTP", OAuth sign-in with dynamic client registration. If a step does not match what you see, the next section tells you what to do.
Step by step: add Running Workout to Perplexity
Allow five minutes, on a computer, in Perplexity on the web. The labels below are the ones used in Perplexity's documentation.
- Create your account on runningworkout.fr by signing in on Garmin's site, and turn on "Historical Data" on the Garmin screen so your past runs can be read.
- In Perplexity, open "Plugins" in the sidebar (or "Customize", then "Connectors", if you don't see "Plugins" yet), then "Add custom", "Connector" and "Add MCP connector".
- Choose "Remote", name the connector "Running Workout" and paste the server address: https://www.runningworkout.fr/mcp
- In the options, pick "OAuth" authentication and the "Streamable HTTP" transport. No client ID to enter: Running Workout supports dynamic registration.
- Tick the box acknowledging the risks of custom connectors, click "Add", then click the connector card: runningworkout.fr opens, approve the authorization screen.
- In a new conversation, select Running Workout in the connector picker or mention it with @, then ask your question.
Once the workout is sent, sync your watch with the Garmin Connect app: it shows up in your training calendar on the date you asked for.
If the option is missing, or Perplexity ignores your data
The most common case, according to Perplexity's help center: the connector was not selected for the conversation, or the search is limited to the web, so Perplexity does not call Running Workout. The other cases:
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No "Add custom" | No subscription, or an Enterprise organization that doesn't allow it | Pro or Max plan, or ask your admin; otherwise use Claude or ChatGPT |
| Answer without your runs | Connector not selected, or sources limited to the web | Select Running Workout or type @, widen the sources, ask again |
| Connector missing on your phone | Perplexity warns a connector may work on the web before it does on mobile | Use Perplexity on the web |
| "No activities" | "Historical Data" declined on the Garmin screen | Re-authorize Garmin from Running Workout with the setting on |
Perplexity Health and Running Workout: two different things
Perplexity Health, launched in March 2026, links Perplexity to health data, some wearables and wellness apps to personalize its answers. According to Perplexity's help center, it is for Pro and Max subscribers in the US, rolling out in phases; Garmin is not among the example sources it names, and the help center does not describe sending workouts to a watch.
Running Workout does something else: it uses Garmin's official connection, writes structured workouts into Garmin Connect (workout library and calendar), and works with any assistant that accepts an MCP connector. Without Perplexity Pro, the same connection works with Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini CLI: see the guides at the bottom of this page.
Frequently asked questions
Can Perplexity connect to Garmin without a subscription?
No, according to Perplexity's documentation: custom MCP connectors are reserved for the Pro, Max and Enterprise plans. Without one, connect Running Workout to Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini CLI instead: same tools, same workouts.
Can I send a workout from the Perplexity app on my phone?
Possibly, but add the connector on the web first. Perplexity warns that a connector can be available on the web before it is on mobile: if Running Workout does not show up in the app, use the web version.
What data does Perplexity see?
Only what the Running Workout connector gives it: your Garmin activities and their detail (pace, heart rate, laps), your profile (MAS, max heart rate, training load), your goals and notes. It only writes planned workouts, never touches your activity history, and you can revoke access from Running Workout at any time.
Which Garmin watches work?
Those that accept Garmin Connect workouts: most recent Forerunner, Fenix, Epix, Enduro, Instinct and Venu models, plus Edge bike computers for cycling.
Is Running Workout free?
Free to start: Garmin connection, plans, reading your activities and 4 workouts a month sent to your watch. Running Workout Pro (€4.90 a month or €35 a year, no commitment) removes the limit.
