Preparing for the 2027 Barcelona Marathon: Gaudí, the sea and a rolling course
The Barcelona Marathon is run in mid-March, as a loop through the city, from the Sagrada Família to the seafront. Rolling rather than flat, with long descents then gentle climbs back, it demands fine pace management. Here is its preparation with a plan set on your Garmin data.

A rolling course, not a flat one
The route descends towards the sea over the first kilometres, follows the port and the beach, then climbs gently back to the centre between the 30th and 38th kilometre. Cumulated climbing is around 150 metres, but the slopes are long and gentle.
That late climb makes the difference: it comes when the legs stiffen. The plan answers with long runs finishing on a gentle uphill in the last six weeks.
Winter preparation, spring race
Mid-March: a 16-week plan from late November, or 12 weeks from late December. January and February carry the load in the cold; March brings the taper and the first runs in light kit.
The AI coach reads your actual sessions every week on Garmin. It checks that the training load climbs without excess and brings an assimilation week forward if how you feel deteriorates two weeks running.
Pacing: do not let the descent carry you
The first kilometres go downhill, the crowd pushes, the pace runs away. The plan's instruction: first three kilometres at target pace plus 10 seconds despite the slope, then target pace along the seafront, plus 10 seconds per kilometre on the final climb.
- Late November to December: volume, long run up to 2 h.
- January-February: marathon-pace blocks, long runs finishing uphill.
- March: taper, fresh legs for the final climb.
The watch with its pace range per segment is your guardrail on the descent. What you do not waste at the 5th kilometre, you get back at the 35th.
Frequently asked questions
When is the 2027 Barcelona Marathon?
Mid-March, traditionally on a Sunday. Check the official date before entering it in your plan.
Is Barcelona a fast course?
Rolling more than fast: a long descent at the start, a gentle climb at the end. A fast time is possible with well-managed pacing, not by going out fast.
What temperature to expect in March?
Between 10 and 18 °C, sometimes more in the sun on the seafront. The plan schedules a long run in light kit with water every 20 minutes.
