Runna at a glance: price, trial, what stays free
Runna is a running training-plan app, acquired by Strava, priced at $19.99 a month or $119.99 a year in the US (£15.99 or £99.99 in the UK, €19.99 or €119.99 in the eurozone), with a 7-day trial. Without a subscription you keep week 1 of any plan, run recording and activity imports; later workouts need Runna Premium. Strava also sells a combined Strava + Runna subscription, billed yearly.
What Runna does well: plans from 5K to a 50K ultra, custom plans of 6 to 26 weeks, strength training, and most watches (Garmin, Coros, Suunto, Fitbit, Apple Watch). With a Garmin, the next two weeks of your plan land in Garmin Connect every Monday; strength sessions, however, do not sync to the watch.
Why look for a Runna alternative
The same reasons keep coming up, and none of them means Runna is bad:
- Price: $119.99 a year, while Running Workout Pro costs €35 a year and TrainAsONE keeps a £0 tier.
- Conversation: with Runna you message its team; with a connected AI assistant you ask "why this workout?" or "move my long run to Sunday" and get an answer right away.
- Other sports: Runna covers running and strength; Athletica and Running Workout also send cycling and swimming workouts to the watch.
- You already use Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini every day and want it to be your coach too.
Runna alternatives, compared
All four options below send their workouts to a Garmin; they differ on price, adaptation and conversation.
| Option | Price on October 27, 2026 | Adaptation | Conversation | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Runna | $19.99/month or $119.99/year | Based on your performance | Messages to the team | All-in-one app, any watch brand |
| Garmin Coach | Included in Garmin Connect | Run Coach: daily, based on performance and health | No | Recent Garmin, 5K to marathon |
| TrainAsONE | £0 tier; Premium £9.99/month or £99/year | Based on your runs | Questions to the team | Tight budget |
| Athletica | $19.90/month or $189/year | Performance and recovery | AI chat that explains without changing the plan | Triathlon and multisport |
| Running Workout + your assistant | Free to start; Pro €4.90/month or €35/year | Weekly review against your runs | Yes: the assistant creates, moves and sends workouts | Garmin + Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini |
Running Workout is not an app: it plugs your assistant into Garmin Connect. The assistant reads your runs (pace, heart rate, mile splits), your MAS and your training load, sets up a 5K, 10K, half or marathon plan, and sends the workouts to your Garmin calendar. Its limits: Garmin only, an assistant that accepts connectors (see our guides), and, free to start, 4 workouts a month on the watch, plan workouts included.
When to stay with Runna
Stay with Runna if one of these matters more than price:
- Your watch is not a Garmin: Running Workout only reads Garmin.
- You are training for a 50K ultra or want a built-in strength plan.
- You do not want an AI assistant: everything happens in one app.
- You are already on Strava and the combined subscription suits you.
Switching from Runna to Running Workout in ten minutes
- Stop your Runna plan, or disconnect Runna from Garmin Connect, so you do not end up with two plans in the same calendar.
- Connect your Garmin on runningworkout.fr (two minutes, official Garmin sign-in) and turn on historical data.
- Add the Running Workout connector in Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini, following our guides.
- Ask the assistant to review your last four weeks and suggest what comes next.
- Cancel Runna where you bought it (App Store, Google Play, or Paddle on the website): deleting the app does not cancel the subscription.
Frequently asked questions
Is Runna free?
Not beyond the 7-day trial: after that it is $19.99 a month or $119.99 a year. Without a subscription you keep week 1 of every plan, run recording and your completed workouts.
Is Runna owned by Strava?
Yes: Runna's press page refers to Strava's acquisition of Runna. The two apps remain separate, and Strava sells a combined yearly subscription on its website and in its app.
Which Runna alternative works with Garmin?
Garmin Coach, TrainAsONE, Athletica and Running Workout all send their workouts to a Garmin through Garmin Connect. Running Workout is the only one of the four that works through your AI assistant, and it works with Garmin only.
How do I cancel Runna?
Where you subscribed: App Store, Google Play, or Paddle for a purchase on the website. Deleting the app or your account does not cancel it; you keep access until the end of the paid period, according to Runna's help center.
Is Running Workout free?
Free to start: Garmin connection, plans, reading your activities and 4 workouts a month sent to your watch. Running Workout Pro (€4.90 a month or €35 a year, no commitment) removes the limit.
