Send a workout to your Garmin watch: from your phone, your computer or one sentence
From the Garmin Connect app, a workout goes to your watch in three taps: Workouts, the send icon, your watch; it arrives at the next sync. Here is the exact path on your phone and on a computer, where to find the workout on the watch, the causes Garmin lists when it does not show up, and then sending it through your assistant with Running Workout.

From your phone: the Garmin Connect app
This is the most direct route, according to Garmin's help center. Your watch needs to be paired with the Garmin Connect app on your phone.
- Open Garmin Connect, tap More (bottom right), Training & Planning, then Workouts.
- Tap the workout you want to send, then the send icon at the top right.
- Choose your watch: the app passes the workout on at the next sync.
- For a workout on a set day, use Add to Calendar instead, in the workout's top-right menu: the watch downloads upcoming calendar workouts at every sync.
Syncing runs over Bluetooth between watch and phone, and the phone needs an internet connection (mobile data or Wi-Fi). Garmin suggests sending several workouts through the calendar rather than one at a time.
From a computer: connect.garmin.com
On the website, sending directly requires the Garmin Express software installed on the computer, Garmin says. The path: Training & Planning, Workouts, the send icon to the right of the workout, pick the device, then Send to Device; Garmin Express opens and syncs the watch.
Without Garmin Express, go through the calendar: open Calendar, pick a day and drag the workout from the list of workouts onto the date. It will reach the watch at the next sync with the phone app.
Where to find the workout on the watch
On a recent watch such as the Forerunner 970, Garmin's manual gives this path: from the watch face, upper-right button, Activities, Run, lower-left button, Training, then:
- Workout Library for a workout sent without a date;
- Training Calendar for a workout scheduled on the calendar;
- Do Workout, then the upper-right button to start the timer.
When a workout is scheduled for today, the watch also offers it when you scroll down from the watch face. On other models the menu is simply called Workouts, or Training Plans for calendar workouts: the exact name is in your watch's manual. Only workouts compatible with the chosen activity appear.
The workout does not show up: the causes Garmin gives
When a workout sent from Garmin Connect does not arrive, Garmin's help center always lists the same causes, and they apply to a workout sent by Running Workout too. Check them in this order:
| Symptom | Cause according to Garmin | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing reaches the watch | No sync: Bluetooth off, phone offline, battery saver mode | Bluetooth on at both ends, restart watch and phone, turn off battery saver, then sync |
| One workout is missing, the others are there | Limit of 25 non-scheduled workouts on the watch, preloaded ones included | Delete a workout on the watch: activity list, profile, Workouts, the workout, Delete |
| Two workouts show up as one | Same first 15 characters in the name | Rename them so the start differs |
| The workout is not in the list | Workout type not supported by the model or by that activity profile | Check Garmin's compatibility list and open the workout from a Run profile |
| Cannot send from the website | Garmin Express not installed on the computer | Install Garmin Express, or use the calendar and the phone app |
Garmin also notes that scheduled workouts sent from Garmin Connect overwrite the training calendar already on the watch, and that a scheduled workout stays on the watch whether you complete it or skip it.
Sending the workout through your assistant, with Running Workout
With Running Workout, sending happens in the conversation: you ask Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini for the workout with a date, the assistant shows it to you and, once you agree, creates it in Garmin Connect and places it on the calendar. The watch receives it at the next sync, in its training calendar: no send icon, no Garmin Express.
Without a date, the workout stays in Garmin Connect: ask again with a date so it goes to the watch. The assistant can also list scheduled workouts, move one or delete one. Garmin's rules still apply: if nothing arrives, sync the watch.
