Import a training plan into Garmin Connect: what Garmin accepts, and a plan placed on your calendar
According to its help center, Garmin Connect does not import a plan as a file: no PDF, no spreadsheet. It offers its own Garmin Coach plans, receives plans from apps linked to your account, and for everything else each workout is rebuilt by hand. Here are those options, then the shortest one: your plan set up on Running Workout, then placed on your Garmin Connect calendar by your assistant, the first week within a few minutes.

-
« Here is my week: Tuesday 8 × 400 m at 95% of my MAS, Thursday 45 minutes easy, Sunday a 1 h 15 long run. Create these three workouts on the right dates in Garmin. »

What Garmin Connect accepts, and what it does not
Garmin's help center describes no way to import a plan or a workout from a file into Garmin Connect. Data import is for activities you have already recorded (.fit, .gpx, .tcx), course import is for routes. A plan you received as a PDF, a spreadsheet or from a coach therefore comes in through one of these routes:
| Where the plan comes from | What happens in Garmin Connect |
|---|---|
| Garmin Coach plan | Picked under Training & Planning, then Garmin Coach Plans; workouts are placed on the calendar |
| App linked to your account, such as TrainingPeaks or Running Workout | Workouts arrive on the Garmin Connect calendar by themselves |
| PDF, spreadsheet, book or coach's plan | No import: each workout is created by hand, then placed on its date |
| .fit, .gpx or .tcx activity file | Imported as a run you have already done, not as a workout to do |
Garmin's own plans: Garmin Coach and self-guided plans
Garmin offers three families of running plans, according to its help center: Run Coach, adaptive, from 5K to marathon, over 6 to 52 weeks, on some watches only; Expert Running Plans by Jeff Galloway, Greg McMillan and Amy Parkerson-Mitchell, from 5K to half marathon, over 6 to 26 weeks, for runners at 7:00 per mile or slower; and self-guided plans of 12 to 16 weeks, from 5K to marathon, on the website only.
- App: More, Training & Planning, Garmin Coach Plans, then pick a plan type and answer the questions.
- Website: Training & Planning, Garmin Coach Plans, Browse All Plans, then the self-guided section and a start or end date.
- Workouts appear on the Garmin Connect calendar, then on the watch at the next sync.
Their limits, as Garmin describes them: Run Coach does not let you reschedule a workout (it adapts on its own), self-guided plans cannot be edited or paused, and targets are paces or heart rates chosen by Garmin, not your percentages of MAS (maximal aerobic speed).
Copying a plan into Garmin Connect by hand
For a plan from somewhere else, Garmin's method is to rebuild each workout, then place it on its date in the calendar. In the Garmin Connect app:
- Create the workout: More, Training & Planning, Workouts, Create a Workout, then Save.
- Place it: open the workout, top-right menu, Add to Calendar, then pick the date.
- Or start from Calendar: tap a day, the top-right button, then Add Workout.
- Sync: the watch downloads upcoming calendar workouts; they show up under Training Calendar or Training Plans, depending on the model.
Two points Garmin flags: scheduled workouts sent from Garmin Connect overwrite the training calendar already on the watch, and names that start with the same 15 characters can get mixed up. Count the time too: a 16-week plan with 4 runs a week means 64 workouts to enter.
The plan placed by your assistant, with Running Workout
With Running Workout, you set up the plan on the website (plan type, race date, runs per week), then your assistant, Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini, reads those settings back to you, builds the plan once you agree and places the week's workouts on your Garmin Connect calendar. The watch receives them at the next sync, with their steps and paces worked out from your MAS.
- Marathon: 12 to 16 weeks, 3 to 7 runs a week.
- Half marathon: 10 weeks, 3 or 4 runs a week.
- 10K: 8 weeks, 3 to 5 runs; 5K: 6 weeks, 3 or 4 runs.
- Return to running: 6 weeks, 3 runs, no MAS or race date needed.
Workouts go out week by week: ask for the next one whenever you like. Already following a plan from a book or a coach? Paste the week's text into the conversation: the assistant creates each workout on its date in Garmin Connect, once you agree. Garmin watches only; running, cycling and pool swimming.
Frequently asked questions
Can I import a PDF or Excel training plan into Garmin Connect?
No, according to Garmin's help center: file import covers activities (.fit, .gpx, .tcx) and courses. A PDF or spreadsheet plan has to be rebuilt workout by workout, or pasted into a conversation with your assistant connected through Running Workout, which creates each workout on its date.
Can I import a FIT workout file into Garmin Connect?
Garmin's help center does not describe importing a workout from a file: its manual upload adds a .fit file as an activity, not as a workout to do. Workouts to do come from Garmin Connect itself, a Garmin Coach plan or an app linked to your account, such as Running Workout.
Where do I find the plan on my watch?
In the watch's training calendar, after a sync. On a recent Forerunner: Run activity, Training, then Training Calendar; when a workout is scheduled for today, the watch also offers it when you scroll down from the watch face.
What happens if I disconnect the app that placed the plan?
According to Garmin, workouts a third-party app added to your Garmin Connect calendar stay there when you remove its access: delete them by hand if you no longer want them. That applies to workouts placed by Running Workout too.
Is Running Workout free?
Free to start: Garmin connection, plans, reading your activities and 4 workouts a month sent to your watch. Running Workout Pro (€4.90 a month or €35 a year, no commitment) removes the limit.
