Preparing for the 2027 Boston Marathon: descents, Heartbreak Hill and qualifying
The Boston Marathon, on the third Monday of April, is the world's oldest annual marathon and the only major that requires a qualifying time. A point-to-point course, downhill then hilly with the famous Heartbreak Hill at the 32nd kilometre, it is prepared with hills and restraint. Here is the plan set on your Garmin data.

A course that wrecks the quads
From Hopkinton to Boston the route drops 140 metres, most of it in the first 25 kilometres. Then come the four Newton hills, including Heartbreak Hill, between the 27th and 33rd kilometre. The initial descent wears the quads; the hills arrive when they are already damaged.
The plan builds long runs with sustained descents from week 6, to get the thighs used to eccentric work, and 3-minute hill repeats in the last eight weeks.
Qualifying and the calendar
The qualifying time depends on age and sex, and places go to the fastest under the bar. You therefore need a few minutes of margin from a fast marathon the previous autumn, such as Valencia or Frankfurt.
Mid-April race: a 16-week plan from late December, or 12 weeks from late January. The AI coach reads your actual sessions on Garmin and applies its cold rule through January and February.
Pacing: restraint on the descent, patience in Newton
Boston's trap is known to everyone and yet repeated every year: going out too fast on the descent. The plan's instruction: target pace plus 15 seconds per kilometre over the first 8 kilometres, target pace afterwards, plus 20 seconds on each Newton hill without making it up.
- Long runs with descents, from week 6.
- 3-minute hill repeats, last eight weeks.
- Hill instruction: + 20 s/km, no compensation on the descents.
After Heartbreak Hill there are 9 km of descent to Boylston Street. If you held the instruction, that is where you overtake.
Frequently asked questions
When is the 2027 Boston Marathon?
The third Monday of April, a public holiday in Massachusetts. Check the official date before entering it in your plan.
What time do you need to qualify?
It depends on age and sex, and the real cut-off is often lower than the official standard. Aim for a few minutes of margin from a fast autumn marathon.
Why is Heartbreak Hill so feared?
It is neither long nor steep, but it comes at the 32nd kilometre after 25 km of descent that have worn the quads. It is the placement, not the gradient.
