Preparing for the 2027 Tokyo Marathon: the early-March major

The Tokyo Marathon opens the season of the six majors in early March. Flat course, precise organisation, cool temperatures: it is a race for a fast time, whose only obstacle is the lottery to get in. Here is its winter preparation with a plan that reads your Garmin data.

A flat, wide course

Start in front of Shinjuku city hall, long avenues towards Asakusa and Ginza, finish in front of Tokyo Station: the route drops 30 metres in the first kilometres then stays flat. Six-lane avenues leave room to run your own line.

Early-March temperatures sit around 5 to 12 °C, with a risk of cold wind. The plan schedules a cold-weather long run in race kit, to test gloves and layers.

A full winter preparation

Early March: a 16-week plan from mid-November, or 12 weeks from mid-December. The holidays fall mid-preparation, January and February carry the peak load in the cold.

The AI coach reads your actual sessions on Garmin every week and applies its cold rule below 5 °C: longer warm-up, no short intervals on icy days, long run moved if the road is slippery.

Pacing and jet lag

Arrive three days early at minimum: eight hours of time difference are hard to digest in 48 hours. The plan treats these days as active rest, 20 easy minutes to loosen up.

On the course, the classic flat-route instruction: first three kilometres at target pace plus 10 seconds, target pace afterwards, fuel every 20 minutes. Wind in the long avenues is handled at the low end of the pace range.

Frequently asked questions

When is the 2027 Tokyo Marathon?

Early March, traditionally the first Sunday. Check the official date before entering it in your plan.

How do you get a bib?

Through the very selective lottery, an authorised tour operator, or a charity entry. Registration opens in August of the previous year.

How early should you arrive?

Three days minimum to absorb the jet lag. The plan builds these days in as active rest, with no quality session.
