Manchester Marathon 2027: a 12-week plan built around April 18, on your Garmin
Race day is Sunday, April 18, 2027, and training starts on Monday, January 25. In two minutes, Running Workout sets the plan to that date; then your AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT…) sends each week's sessions to your watch through Garmin Connect, and adjusts what follows when a week doesn't go to plan.

A flat course, from Old Trafford to Oxford Road
The Manchester Marathon is flat: the organizer bills it as the UK's flattest major marathon. On the 2026 route, which the official site shows as a preview of the 2027 race, the start is near Old Trafford; the course heads down Chester Road to Stretford and Sale, loops through Altrincham around mile 13, comes back through Sale Moor and Chorlton-cum-Hardy, then crosses Hulme to finish on Oxford Road, just south of the city centre.
On a course billed as flat, it all comes down to even pacing, with long straights such as Chester Road and Washway Road. Start and finish are in two different places. The 2027 route may still change: check the final map on the official site before race day.
Three sessions for a flat course
On flat ground, what matters is holding marathon pace for a long time. Ask your AI assistant for these three sessions: it builds them and sends them to your Garmin watch, with paces worked out from your MAS.
- Marathon-pace blocks: 20 min warm-up, 3 × 3 miles at marathon pace (77–79% of MAS), 3 min easy jog between blocks, 10 min cool-down.
- Threshold: 15 min warm-up, 3 × 10 min at threshold pace, 2 min jogging recovery, 10 min cool-down, to raise the pace you can hold without going into the red.
- Fast-finish long run: 2 h 15, with the last 40 minutes at marathon pace, like the run home through Chorlton and Hulme to Oxford Road.
A late-winter build
Mid-April race: the 12-week version of the plan starts on Monday, January 25, the 16-week version on Monday, December 28, just after Christmas. The first weeks are run in winter, often in the dark on weekdays; the longest run (2 h 30, including 45 minutes at marathon pace) falls in the week of March 22, and April is for the taper.
A week goes sideways (work, the Easter break around March 28)? At the end of the week, your assistant reviews it from your Garmin activities: sessions done or missed, training load. It then decides whether to repeat the week or carry on, and sends the next one to your watch.
Entry and race day
Public places for 2027 are gone: according to the organizer, they sold out in ten days. A limited number of places remain through the race's official charity partners, with a fundraising commitment. The 2027 start time isn't on the official site yet; since start and finish are in different places on the 2026 route, plan your journey back.
Frequently asked questions
When is the 2027 Manchester Marathon?
Sunday, April 18, 2027, according to the official site. The start time for this edition isn't published there yet, and the route shown is the 2026 one, given as a preview.
Can I still enter?
Not through public entry: 2027 places are sold out. Places remain through the race's official charities, in exchange for a fundraising commitment.
Manchester or London for a fast time?
Both suit a fast time, a week apart: Manchester on April 18, London on April 24–25, 2027. Manchester is billed as flat, London starts downhill. The 12-week plan is the same: only the date changes.
Is Running Workout free?
Free to start: Garmin connection, plans, reading your activities and 4 workouts a month sent to your watch. Running Workout Pro (€4.90 a month or €35 a year, no commitment) removes the limit.
