Pace zones on your Garmin watch: how the plan fills them, and why they differ from Garmin's

When your AI coach pushes a session, each step reaches the watch with a pace or heart-rate range. The watch beeps if you leave it. Those ranges are calculated from your VMA, not from Garmin's default zones. Here is the difference, and how to read the alerts while running.

Plan ranges versus Garmin zones

Garmin offers five pace or HR zones calculated from generic formulas, often from a max HR estimated by age. The plan sends for each step a precise range: 4:27 to 4:33 for a threshold block, 65 to 75% of max HR for an easy run, calculated from your actual VMA and your max HR read on Garmin.

Both coexist: Garmin zones serve free sessions, plan ranges serve pushed sessions. Nothing to configure on the watch.

Reading alerts while running

A "too fast" alert in the first minutes of a block is normal: slow down a notch and let the pace settle. A "too slow" alert at the end of a threshold block says the target pace is a little high for today: finish the block, the coach will see it.

On easy runs with an HR target, the "too high" alert is the most useful of all: it is what stops you running easy days too fast.

When the ranges change

After a new validated VMA: all upcoming sessions are recalculated. In strong heat: pace ranges drop by 3 to 5% and HR takes over. After a max HR correction you confirm: easy runs change range from the following week.

The coach tells you each time what changed and why, in the weekly review.

Frequently asked questions

Should I change my zones in Garmin Connect?

No. Plan sessions carry their own ranges. You can align your Garmin zones with your VMA for free sessions, but it is not necessary.

Does the watch show pace in min/km or min/mile?

In your watch's unit. The plan sends speeds in metres per second, the watch displays them in its unit.

Why is the range so narrow?

Six seconds per kilometre are enough to tell threshold from intervals. A wide range would serve no purpose.
